New Union Celebrated 175 Years in October, 2009

On the first Sunday of October, 2009, New Union held its annual homecoming celebration, only this time it also celebrated 175 years of ministry and witness.    Dr. Malcolm L. Warford, a native Lexingtonian and Transylvania University graduate who had preached at New Union when Ben Lewis was the minister back in the 1960s, and then had been the preacher for the 150th anniversary of the church again in 1984, was the preacher for the 175th anniversary.   He said that he hoped to be available for the congregation’s 200th anniversary.  (Rev. Kemper noted that since Dr. Warford’s grandfather had lived to be 100, that it was well within the realm of possibility!)

A large crowd gathered, filling the sanctuary in ways that we wish it could be filled every week.  Becca Lewis traveled from Pennsylvania to represent her father’s long service to New Union.  Other families with historic ties to the church were present as well.  A picnic lunch on the grounds followed the service, allowing people a wonderful opportunity to visit and relive old times.  Rosie’s Ponies brought four little Shetland ponies for the little children to ride, as a contribution to our celebration.   There are pictures of the event on the New Union Christian Church “Group page” on Facebook.
